No Force
There’s no need to force. For one thing, we don’t need to get anywhere. We might have a vision, a destination in mind. That’s good. We don’t want to be aimless. We do have desires and intentions. But we don’t need to grip our desires with steely hands and get there in the next hour. A journey takes the time it takes; we can’t always know how long that will be or where it might take us. There may be stops along the way, detours even. We don’t need to push our way forward. It’s better to feel good, to breathe deeply, to be relaxed when we work. Art isn’t about aggression; it’s about presence.
When we have a vision for our work, this issue will come up over and over. We come close to realizing our vision but see we’ve fallen short of our intention. We begin again and try another approach. Again, we fall short. Now we might begin to tighten up and to slip into a clenched determination. It’s very important to observe ourselves as we work. If there’s steam coming out of our ears, we’re trying too hard. When we force, we close the door to inspiration. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t work hard. To get anywhere, we need devotion. But hard work is different from forcing; it’s steady and clear.
To create we need to stay flexible and open, so we can see clearly. We may well need to start a project over, but we need to do so in a relaxed way. When we notice ourselves tensing up, we need to step back and let go. We need to forget about it. It’s the only way to see clearly. When we let go, the answer and even the ability comes.
